35年以上にわたり、14日以降の胚に対する体外実験禁止という「14日ルール」が、世界中の胚研究にとっての倫理線として存在しました。 このルールが存在する期間中、科学者たちは14日まで、あるいは14日を超えて体外で胚を育てることができなかったので、このルールは疑問視されることはなかった。 しかし、2016年5月、米国と英国の研究所が、ヒト胚を体外で13日まで維持できることを初めて報告したのです。 この発展や、組織化された胚のような細胞構造を含む体外研究の他の進歩により、このルール、その起源、適用、将来の範囲について多くの疑問が生じました。 この会議では、生命倫理、幹細胞研究、発生学、法律の専門家が集まり、このルールの倫理的裏付けと将来の範囲について議論しました。 議論された質問：

• 14日間ルールを確立した歴史的、倫理的、科学的根拠は何か？

• 最近の進歩を踏まえて14日間ルールを見直すべきか？
